Terminology Tuesday!

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Depending on the move, the specifics and details can get confusing. That’s why we created Terminology Tuesdays where each week we will go over five moving terms that will help you have a better understanding of your moving process. Be sure to check out our archives, we’ll be doing this each week. Enjoy!

Accessorial Services/Additional Services – services such as packing, unpacking, extra stop, or shuttle that you request to be performed, or are necessary because of landlord requirements or other special circumstances. Charges for these services are in addition to the transportation costs.

Diversion – when a customer changes the destination of their shipment after it is en route, transportation charges shall be calculated from the point of origin, to the point at which the carrier is able to effect the diversion, plus the transportation charge from the diversion point to the new destination point.

Extra Labor – This is just as it sounds. Hourly labor charges usually a 15 minute minimum, for performing any requested services for which specific fees are not published. This generally covers activities such as removing and placing items in attics and crawlspaces, packing and unpacking owner’s furnished containers, etc.

High-Value Article Inventory Form – the carrier will have you fill out a high-value inventory form to list items included in a shipment that are valued around $100 per pound or more, to ensure they are protected accordingly.

Inventory – a detailed descriptive list of the items in the shipment and their condition before the van is loaded.

Lower Utilities Bills?! Here’s How!

Friday, October 16th, 2009

The leaves are falling and the temperature is falling here are a few ways to get that utilities bill falling too.

First things first, don’t wait for the first snowstorm to come through to make sure your heating system is running efficiently and effectively. Now would be a good time to do a routine check up.

Put on an extrat sweater and an extra blanket on the beds allowing you to turn fown the thermostat but still snuggle up in a comfortable temperature. Did you know that turning down your heat by just 2 degrees you are reducing your carbon footprint by 25%?

During the day, open all the blinds and shades to invite the sun in to warm up the rooms, but don’t forget to close them at night to seal out the cold air.

When was the last time you dusted your light bulbs? This is one small step that you can take to increase the lighting in rooms without adding another source of light. If you have to, choose florescent light bulbs as they are enviornmentally friendly and last longer.

Even if the power switch is off, many electronic devices will still pull in electricity, so when your not using an electronic device or charger for an appliance, unplug it! This will save you energy and money (think about how often you leave your cell phone charger plugged in, yikes!)

Think about it, these are all small steps that you can take at home to help you save money and the earth; all while snuggling up with cold weather favorites like hot chocoloate or apple cider J

Goodbye Summer- Hello Fall

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

It’s about that time of the year again, where the sun is starting to hide and the cold air is making its way into the summer nights. It’s time to pack up the summer gear and bring out the anticipated layers for the fall. To bring you Peace of Mind, we have provided a list of a few tips to make your exchange for the sun a little easier.

1. The stuff you don’t wear- sell, give or throw away (this goes out to all you packrats)

2. Store what you can into old suitcases or plastic storage bins (you know, the ones collecting dust bunnies under your bed)

3. Use markers and labels to organize boxes so it’s easier to find things when summer rolls back around again (it will be back before you know it)

4. Listen to a good CD. This will help you take the focus off of organizing and onto something you enjoy

5. Don’t forget to take breaks! The summer sun is not gone yet, so get some fresh air if you need it!

6. Reward yourself. When you’re done enjoy a pumpkin spice latte or a root beer float to welcome in the fall!
