Moving is overwhelming, we empathize with you on that but since we are here to help you with this process, we hope to make the transition as smooth as possible into your new home. Cleaning is a whole other story that we do not like to get involved in. Even though we do not provide any type of cleaning service, we will provide tips on cleaning products and quick easy tips to help your house look spickety span.  

When cleaning mirrors or windows, use coffee filters because they do not leave any cotton residue on the surface.

The kitchen sink can harbor more bacteria that the floor of your bathroom. Stick to natural cleaning products, we suggest a vinegar based solution.

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and is also awesome for scrubbing and unclogging drains.

To make a homemade furniture polish, we suggest mixing about ½ cup of olive oil and 1 cup lemon juice.

Speaking of furniture, if you find candle wax hardened on any surface, use a hairdryer to melt it and wipe any excess wax off the surface.

To get that unwanted pet hair off clothes, bed linens and other pet covered areas, mix a teaspoon of fabric softener with water in a spray bottle to create an anti static solution.

A good rule of thumb to abide by when cleaning is to remember not to use any harsh chemicals on any surface or anything you eat from. When cleaning the microwave, we suggest using white vinegar as a natural solvent. How to get off baked on foods we suggest using plain old, baking soda.

Lemon, baking soda, and vinegar are all inexpensive gentle cleaning solutions and will keep your home smelling and looking fresh and will not take a toll on your bank account.

However, there are many cleaning solutions that cannot be made at home to get the best and cleanest results. For those, we recommend 7^th Generation products as well as Shaklee’s products.

During the Holiday season, your busy schedules probably just got slammed with a number of dinner parties to attend. Attending dinner parties are fun but hosting dinner parties can be fun too! Whether you are having a small get together or many people over for a green celebration, planning does not have to be stressful hopefully this article will ease your list of things to do.

So you’ve decided you’re going to have a dinner party. Next step is figuring out how you’re going to send your invitations. To go green and ease the carbon footprint on getting your attendees attention to save the date, may we suggest using social media? What a quick and easy way to contact your network of friends. Remember, just because its online doesn’t mean you can’t get creative. Send your invites a jazzed up email, they will be excited to open it making them even more excited to attend, we like to use Evite.com. Another idea is to suggest a prize for those who arrive by alternative forms of transportation other than by car, but whatever the prize is, make it green and make it good. When you decorate for your party create displays of fresh flowers and candles and get creative with the seasons offerings. Pinecones, lemons, leaves, and oranges are all things found in or around your house that can add to the fall season and add to the mood of a comfortable environment. Don’t forget to invest in some ‘green wine’ no, the color of the wine is not green but you can compliment any dish by supporting an ecologically sensitive winery.  Or, you can have green drinks by supporting a local micro brewery, such as New Belgium Brewery, O’Dell’s Brewery and Fort Collins Brewery.  When shopping for your dinner party, don’t forget about the after dinner coffee which you can go green by supporting fair trade. If there are leftovers, send everyone home with whatever is left, or compost your scraps for your garden. You should always seek out green household cleaning products because they are good for your health and good for the environment too.  

As you can see these are quick easy steps to plan for your green Holiday celebration. All of these things are easy on your wallet; health and the environment too, have fun and stay green this holiday season.

Terminology Tuesday!

Depending on the move, the specifics and details can get confusing. That’s why we created Terminology Tuesdays where each week we will go over five moving terms that will help you have a better understanding of your moving process. Carrier – the moving company providing interstate transportation of household goods under whose Department of Transportation registration the shipment is moved. 

Diversion – when a customer changes the destination of their shipment after it is en route, transportation charges shall be calculated from the point of origin, to the point at which the carrier is able to effect the diversion, plus the transportation charge from the diversion point to the new destination point.

Order Number – used to identify the customer’s shipment and appears on the upper right corner of the Order for Service and the Bill of Lading. This number should be used whenever the carrier is contacted. 

Overflow – when articles to be shipped are left behind due to insufficient space on the primary van. An additional van(s) is then utilized for transportation and delivery.

Survey – performed by an agent to examine the customer’s belongings in order to develop an estimate of move charges.

Van Operator – oversees the loading, hauling and unloading of your possessions.

If your leaving town for the Holidays there are a few precautions you should take in order to keep your home safe and sound.

Remember to stop your mail and newspaper service before you leave town. Nothing screams “no one is home” like a week’s worth of mail or newspapers stacked in your front yard for the world to see.

It’s really important to remember to NEVER write “take all deliveries to the next door neighbor” hopefully, you understand why.

Trim any overgrown, trees, shrubs or bushes because that is a safe zone for any buglers to hide out.

Don’t change your answering machine to suggest that no one is home, for example, it’s probably not a good idea to say, “Hello, you’ve reached so and so, we are in the Bahamas until the 28^th”. That’s ear candy for anyone with sticky fingers.

Also, now that we are living in this day in age where technology allows us to engage in constant conversation, be careful what you post on social networking sites like Facebook and/or Twitter. You never know who is reading your posts and you’d rather be safe than sorry.

Pull all the plugs out of the walls, this will help save energy and cut back on your bills but also it reduces any chance of fire hazards.

Remove the spare key from under the rug and give it to a neighbor. You could bribe them by some freshly baked cookies to check on your house periodically.

Move valuables away from doors and windows for various reasons.

Use timers on many lights found throughout the house so it may appear that people are home.

We don’t mean to scare you while you are away on a luxurious vacation but we do think it is imperative for any travelers to take these safety precautions so you can arrive at a safe and sound home.

“They” say it takes around a year to a year and a half to meet people in a new community that you can truly call a friend. Depending on where you move, it can take longer than that. Here are some tips to make it easier, and quicker!

Chamber of Commerce: Never rule out the chamber, even if you aren’t a business owner. Your local chamber can connect you to businesses you need, events to attend, and new people to meet that can make you feel at home. Check out Chambers of Commerce, USA Directory and Visitor Bureaus US Directory.

Another great way to meet people and get familiar with your new community is through Livability.com  “Livability.com is an online portal connecting people seeking relocation information with some of the most livable communities in the United States.” This website is made for people relocating. They also include local food and a digital newsstand. What a wonderful resource for people moving!

Last but not least, don’t forget about using social media! Twitter and Facebook have features where you can search by city and state. Use Facebook search bar, and for Twitter use Twellowhood.com

Order for Service – a document authorizing the moving company to transport your household goods. 

SIT aka Storage-in-Transit  – the temporary storage of your household goods in the warehouse of the carrier’s agent, pending further transportation at a later date. SIT service may not exceed a total of 180 calendar days. After 180 days, the interstate nature of the shipment ends and is converted to the rules of the local warehouseman. 

Fuel Surcharge – just as it sounds, the carrier’s tariff provides for a percentage adjustment to the transportation charge, and SIT Pickup and Delivery, to aid in the recovery of the increased cost of fuel. The surcharge, which can change monthly, is based upon the national average cost of diesel as reported by the U.S. Department of Energy. 

Shuttle Service – As most of you might be familiar with, a shuttle service is used if the assigned over-the-road van is unable to make a normal pickup or delivery because of physical constraints. A shuttle service is the use of a secondary, smaller vehicle to complete the pickup or delivery. Charges for this service are based on the weight of the shipment and the location where the service is performed. 

Tariff – a publication containing the carrier’s rates, rules and regulations for services performed, applicable to the customer’s move.
