5 Tips to Reduce Stress During Your Move

Friday, October 30th, 2009

As we all know, moving can be one of the most stressful things a person goes through. Finding a new place, packing, switching over bills and changing your address, cleaning, moving and unpacking sure can take a toll on the body.

Here are 5 tips that can help any situation (especially moving), a little more relaxing.

1. Meditation – Even if you only have 5 minutes to spare, do it. Meditation is a great way to clear your mind, relax your body, and energize your mind. No matter where you are, it is easy to just sit back, close your eyes, and try to think about nothing. Just envision something that makes you happy, breathe, and relax your body. It will do wonders for the move.

2. Yoga – This might seem like a daunting, time-consuming task, but doing just one or two yoga posses can greatly calm down the body, loose up the muscles and make you feel more energized. The Warrior Pose and Down Dog are a couple of my personal favorites for stretching out my body and for getting my blood flowing. Take ten minutes, do some stretching, hold a couple of yoga posses, and get back to moving!

3. Tea – Don’t underestimate the power a hot cup of tea has on the body, especially tea that includes chamomile or lavender. It is so soothing to the body, and clears the mind. It only consists of heating up some hot water and throwing in a tea bag, then sit for 10 minutes and enjoy. It is important to take breaks during your move (which we often don’t do because we are in a hurry for it to be over), but when they are taken, they can completely revive your mind and spirit, and make you much more effective at packing those boxes and lifting that furniture.

4. Laugh – In any stressful situation, the first thing to be thrown out the door and never allowed back in is laughter. Laughter has so many positive health benefits, and releases endorphins, which makes you happy! Try to laugh at a situation, a person, or yourself. It will lighten the mood and relieve some stress.

5. Breathing – And last, but most importantly, breathe. When we get caught up in all of the hustle and bustle of moving, we forget to take care of ourselves, and forget to take deep, fulfilling breaths. When feeling stressed out during your move, stop, take 3 deep breathes in counting to ten each time, release, and feel the stress melt away. It works every time!

Good luck with your move, remember to put yourself first, and if you need any help, please feel free to contact us.

CO Weather… Like A Box Of Chocolates, You Never Know What You’re Going to Get

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

If you are thinking about moving or relocating your business to the state of Colorado, there is one thing we must warn you about, the weather! Most people assume that Colorado is always snowing and freezing cold, however this is far from the truth (except for today of course). Unlike many states, Colorado does have four seasons. It may come as a surprise but Colorado has over 300 days of sunshine but that does not mean that is does not and will not get cold, in fact, we have weather that even the weather forecasters  have a hard time predicting. One day will be beautiful blue skies and the next will be a winter storm warning with school closures, take this last week for example. If you are moving to Colorado, we warn you to prepare yourself for all occasions because you will probably experience all four seasons in just one week. Rest assured that the people of Colorado seem to always find ways to enjoy their days outside whether it is hot or cold. However, moving in the hot heat or snowy conditions may not sound like a fun idea, but that’s where we come in. Let us help your transition by being the movers you turn to when moving to Colorado. Not only will we help move you into your new home, we’ll help you ease into the idea of the ever changing weather patterns. So we wanted to warn you of the weather in Colorado, to say the least, our weather patterns are unpredictable and keep you on your toes but that is what keeps Colorado an active place and don’t worry, we have outdoor activities for any weather occasion that may come as a surprise.

Afraid of a ‘Spooky’ Move? How to Avoid Having a Horror Story Move

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

There are an unfortunate number of untrustworthy moving companies which pervade our industry and give it a bit of a black eye. There are, however, a number of ways to make sure you are hiring a moving company in Colorado with a good reputation, a history of successful moves, and protection for you and your property during the moving process.
We’ve compiled a list of things you should consider when searching for a moving company, inspired by suggestions from AMSA, the Better Business Bureau, and MovingScam.com:
Ask friends, relatives and co-workers about a reliable moving company in Colorado. A first-hand recommendation is far more reliable than ads from companies themselves.
Visit www.movingscam.com to make sure the mover you’re considering doesn’t have a sordid past! To find out which movers have deservedly bad reputations, MovingScam.com has a blacklist, an active message board, and a ton of helpful information.
If your move involves travel within the State of Colorado, don’t do business with a mover that is not registered with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC). The PUC requires all movers to be registered, which in turn means they must have vehicle, cargo, and general liability insurance. You don’t want to use a moving company Colorado doesn’t list as having this kind of insurance. Hint: Look for their PUC # number placed prominently in their phone book advertising.
Check with the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) at www.moving.orgto find out more information about a company, and to see if the company is an AMSA member, or better yet, if they are an AMSA Certified Mover. Exodus is one of two in Colorado who are!
Make sure that you’re considering a moving company which Colorado’s Better Business Bureau lists as a member. Check the Bureau’s website at www.bbb.org. By the way: did you know that Exodus moved the Mountain States BBB in Northern Colorado?
Avoid Internet-sourced movers. Internet brokers are anonymous and can often be hard to track down when you have a dispute or dilemma. Many victims of moving scams report that they found the ‘virtual company’ online. A website (like ours!) is commonplace for businesses, but make sure to find a local, professional mover with a stellar reputation – a hometown firm that moves people nationwide, and who will give you a reasonable cost of moving estimate. (Beware low ball quotes that are “too good to be true.” They probably are!)
Make sure the company will not subcontract out your move. Clarify that the mover who gives you your cost of moving estimate will be the mover who shows up on moving day—if another mover appears, fire them on the spot!
Don’t be afraid to ask for as much information about your mover as possible: get Department of Transportation (DOT) license numbers, dates of operation, owners’ names, and references—which you should then follow up and call.
Make sure your mover does regular drug testing and full background checks of all their employees. And this should be mandatory: determine that they are on the payroll! You don’t want temporary, untrained labor borrowed for your job and then have them take off for parts unknown – with your stuff!
Get solid estimates, read the contracts line by line, and compare them.
Adequately cover your goods – most companies have several valuation options to cover your belongings.
At Exodus Moving & Storage, we’re very proud that we meet our own stringent standards for excellence. We’re not afraid to be held up against the competition, because we know our reputation and quality of service stand up to the test.

Words from our Clients

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

We wanted to end this week with two emails we got this week. We are so thankful for our clients, they mean a lot to us! Enjoy your weekend!

Ilan,

About a month ago I had the extreme pleasure of using Exodus services as I moved myself and my two young children out of one apartment and into another.  I’m a single parent and am a participant of Project Self-Sufficiency.  It was through PS-S that I was given an opportunity to have Exodus move my entire household for $100.00.  I cannot express just how helpful this generosity was to me and my family. I don’t know what I would’ve done it without such a gracious opportunity.  I just wanted to take the time to earnestly express my gratitude at this endeavor.  Thank you, immensely!

Also, I thought it necessary to commend you for the OUTSTANDING efforts and productivity performed by your staff.  The two men assigned to my move were prompt, polite, efficient and often downright amazing as they figured out quite inventive ways to move extremely awkward furniture up three flights of stairs.  I’ve never been so impressed in such a performance!

You have a great staff, and an even greater heart, to do what you did for me.  Again, I thank you very much.

God Bless!

Sincerely,

Tandi R. McBlair

Email to Suzanne:

We would love to have the use of a trailer or two for our Bikes for Tykes this year.   I spoke with Ilan last week as well.  He suggested that the trailer(s) be parked at First Presbyterian Church where the actual bike distribution takes place, rather than part it at the Realities For Children office then move it.  Great idea! We have been in touch with First Presbyterian Church and they have agreed to let the trailer be parked there in their lot.

We are hoping to get the trailer delivered the first week in November.  Would that work for your schedule?  As soon as I hear from First Presbyterian where they would like it to be parked in their lot I will let you know.

Thank you once again for your help in storing the bikes for the kids.

What to Find When You’re New In Town…

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

When you are relocating, whether a residential relocation or office relocation, you need to know where some important places are right when you get there. These spots are the types of places we might forget to look up until it is urgent that you go there. We’ve created a list of important places that you need to know where they are, and how to get there, once you relocate to your new area.

School(s) – depending on the age of your kids, or yourself, you’ll need to look at elementary school, middle school, high school, college, vocational, trade, etc.

Grocery Store – One easy way to do this is by looking around and paying attention to the places near your home. You can also do a Google search and find the stores that are closest to you.

Shopping Malls/Outlets – This is a location you don’t need to know ASAP, but will be a place you’ll want to know about in the near future. Asking locals about where the best places to shop are, is one of the best ways to find a good shopping mall.

Parks and Walking Trails – Once you get settled, you’re going to want to get outside and experience the surrounding areas to your new home. Find parks and walking trails that are near you for daily exercise and family outings.

Gym/Recreation Center – When it’s cold, you won’t want to get your exercise outside, so make sure you know where the closest gym and/or recreation center is. Since what kind of work out classes they have, you might meet some new friends!

Moving Theater/Moving Rental Store –We all love entertainment. So make sure you find your local video store and Movie Theater.

Hospital – This is a place you want to know where it is the same week you move in, if not before you move. You never know what could happen, but being prepared will help any situation.

Veterinarian and Pet Store –If you have a pet, you’ll want to know where the closest vet is, and maybe where the closest 24 hour emergency pet hospital is. Again, it’s better to be prepared.

Post Office –If you still using snail mail, you’ll want to know where to go to send packages, buy stamps, and pick up gifts sent from relatives.

Gas Station –This will be an easy one to find, just look around as you are driving within your neighborhood!

Library –You might find a great library inside of your school, or you might need to find a new one. Either way, make sure you know where you’re going when you want to start a new novel and learn a new language.

We hope that your relocation goes smoothly. This list along with a moving list and moving check list will help you have an easy move. And if you want Peace of Mind, hire us, we’ll bring you peace of mind all in one piece. J

Things That Can Be Forgotten, But Need to Happen ASAP

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

As we all know, moving can be stressful. They say that moving, divorce and death are the 3 most stressful things a person goes through. When you move, you have so much to think about that many things can be forgotten. That’s why we suggest making a schedule that goes with a to-do list/checklist. Below are some things that you need to make sure you have on your moving list.

Turn off, or switch services – Sometimes when we leave this to the last minute (depending on the service) we are charged extra. We might have to pay for a couple of extra days of utilities, internet, etc. You might also forget and get into your new place and realize that you forgot to forward your mail, or get a new phone number (for our out-of-state relocates that still have land lines). Make sure you call and set up your cancellation or forward days, a couple of weeks before you move. Then, it’s off your list and out of your mind!

Get Boxes – We have found, that sometimes when people are moving, they leave packing to the last minute. This means its’ done quickly and sloppy. If you get boxes early, you can pack a box here and there as you are doing chores, cleaning, before you go to bed, etc. If you didn’t have boxes, you couldn’t do a little packing here and there. Be sure to get them early. They’re easy to store and helps make the week before moving much easier! (And less to do that week, so you can focus on staying calm and relaxed to relieve any stress you might be experiencing.) If you’re moving, and live in Northern CO, we have boxes so please contact us if you need some.

Know where you’re going – If you’re moving to a new state, getting some maps or learning the area is a good idea. Sometimes getting lost is the easiest way to getting to know a new area, but you don’t want to get lost on your way to your new job or the babysitter’s. Looking into this before you go where you’re moving to is a good idea because once you get there, you gotta get where you need to go…on time.

Some Clues to Get Rid of the Moving Blues.

Monday, October 19th, 2009

It is common to feel like your starting from scratch when you move. Experts say that moving is among one of the biggest stresses we may face in our lifetime. Regardless of if the move is next door, across town, a new state, a new country or even a completely different continent, the stress of moving can become physically and emotionally exhausting. Although there are no ways to completely get rid of the anxiety that is packaged with moving, there are a few things you should remember in order to make sure the transition goes as smooth as possible.

Expect the unexpected. Things are going to be different, regardless of how far you are moving. Try and be open to changes and the newness of living somewhere else. Understand that there is going to be an adjustment period where you may feel like you are caught in the ‘in between’, where home doesn’t quite feel like home. Give it time, be patient, and use your resources to meet new people in order to become involved in the community. Identify your surroundings. Get a map and highlight where you are and where you may need to go, so you can easily create a route that is quick and easy to get around town. This will help you to get around without getting lost and will help you be efficient when you are out and have multiple stops to make. Last but not least, be honest with what you are feeling. If you try and box up your emotions as you box up everything in your house, you are going to feel the repercussions later. Use the people in your life as your support system and try and remember that it’s not goodbye- just, see you later.

Whether you are simply learning new routes around town, new street names, new languages, or the rules and customs of a completely new culture, we are here to help you make the transition a little bit smoother. Relax, take a deep breath and trust our excellent service to help settle you and your stuff into your new home.

Lower Utilities Bills?! Here’s How!

Friday, October 16th, 2009

The leaves are falling and the temperature is falling here are a few ways to get that utilities bill falling too.

First things first, don’t wait for the first snowstorm to come through to make sure your heating system is running efficiently and effectively. Now would be a good time to do a routine check up.

Put on an extrat sweater and an extra blanket on the beds allowing you to turn fown the thermostat but still snuggle up in a comfortable temperature. Did you know that turning down your heat by just 2 degrees you are reducing your carbon footprint by 25%?

During the day, open all the blinds and shades to invite the sun in to warm up the rooms, but don’t forget to close them at night to seal out the cold air.

When was the last time you dusted your light bulbs? This is one small step that you can take to increase the lighting in rooms without adding another source of light. If you have to, choose florescent light bulbs as they are enviornmentally friendly and last longer.

Even if the power switch is off, many electronic devices will still pull in electricity, so when your not using an electronic device or charger for an appliance, unplug it! This will save you energy and money (think about how often you leave your cell phone charger plugged in, yikes!)

Think about it, these are all small steps that you can take at home to help you save money and the earth; all while snuggling up with cold weather favorites like hot chocoloate or apple cider J
