Moving? How will it effect the kids?

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Moving across Fort Collins, within Colorado, or across the country? This is a huge event for the entire family! Residential moves are many times associated with a job change, marriage or divorce, a family death, a new home purchase, or a new addition to the family. Along with the event that may be the initial reasoning for the move, the family is also dealing with the numerous life changes a relocation brings, all at once.

For children, the effects can be even more strenuous. While some children may see the change as an exciting new opportunity, others may not. A new bedroom, new neighborhood, new school, new friends, new bus ride, new schedule, new teachers, new coaches… everything is new at once. All this “new” means transition and the unknown for children that are accustomed to their current routine. As parents, there are ways to make this less scary and an smoother process for everyone involved.

An article on www.About.com discusses strategies for reducing stress, anxiety, and making a family move an easier experience. Here is a list of 6 steps for easing the transition for children during a move:

Involve children in the move as early and as much as possible.

Try to maintain daily routines.

Be patient with children and empathize with their feelings.

Help children make new friends and get them involved in their new communities.

Visit new schools to see if orientation programs are available for newcomers.

Look for warning signs of children not adjusting well.

Summertime Heat

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Are you considering a move to Colorado or within Colorado this summer? It is summertime and the living is easy! Just as the smell of neighborhood BBQ’s is a sure sign summer has arrived, so is the huge increase in people moving. Those people planning to move in the summer months (May – Sept) need to plan ahead and book ahead. Moving schdules fill up fast on the first and last days of each month. Because many moving companies find themselves overwhelmed with booked jobs at these rush times, most movers will find help where it is temporary and inexpensive. This last minute labor is paid cash under the table, with no move training, and ever worse, can be help hired directly off the street. Exodus refuses to do comprimise our level of service. We provide our move customers with full-time, extensively trained, payrolled, uniformed, background checked and drug-screened move experts year-round.

How do you know if the mover you hire is using professional move teams? 1. ASK! ”Are all of your move crew employees of your company? Are they on your payroll?” 2. Do the movers where uniforms? 3. Have the movers been through training programs? 4. What screening process is used for hiring? 5. Is the company properly licensed? 6. Is the company an accredited Better Business Bureau member?  7. What happens when your schedule is full?
